A portrait of Rudy Jurgensen

German and U.S. citizen Rudy Jurgensen is a communications professional who ran the Public Affairs department of Silicon Valley“s environmental agency, the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (MROSD) in Los Altos, CA from 2003 until late 2012 when he relocated to Berlin, Germany.

Public Affairs Manager of the MROSD

Jurgensen, who holds a Bachelor“s degree in political science from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Master“s degree in the same subject from New York University, became public affairs manager of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District in December 2003. He was responsible for all public and legislative programs for the district which manages more than 57,000 acres of natural open space lands in California“s Silicon Valley.

In his capacity as Public Affairs Manager, Rudy Jurgensen led the Public Affairs department with 8 direct reports which was responsible for designing and implementing all public outreach strategies and activities. He established and ensured adherence to the annual $1.5 million department budget as well as work plans, schedules and performance goals for all departmental operations.

Jurgensen was able to increase the agency“s recognition in public by 300 percent, significantly expanded press coverage and launched an award-winning Web site.

In addition, Jurgensen also designed and implemented the district“s legislative plan and was able to obtain $27.2 million in additional funding.

Jurgensen joins Kearns & West in San Francisco

Prior to his work at the district, Rudy Jurgensen worked at Kearns & West of San Francisco from August 1996 until December 2003. As Director of Client Services, Rudy Jurgensen advised clients including the U.S. Forest Service, telecommunications company Pac-West, the Edison Electric Institute and the Mendocino Redwood Company.

Among his accomplishments were a successful public affairs campaign for a medium-sized telecommunications company against a Fortune 500 provider to maintain a regulatory arrangement that underpinned the company“s chief revenue source and provided the basis for its initial public stock offering. To support the campaign, Rudy Jurgensen also helped organize Internet service providers to meet with state regulators, legislators and local opinion leaders, causing dozens of legislators and interest groups to support the company. He also worked with businesses to prompt thousands of personal customer e-mails to policy makers.

Other successes included positioning the electric energy industry as a leader in the country“s drive for greater energy efficiency and sustainability and a multi-year stakeholder involvement program for business clients.

Legislative work in Germany and Europe

Jurgensen started his public affairs career twenty years ago in Hamburg, Germany where he worked as an Account Executive at Industrie-Contact AG, managing media relations for clients, implementing public affairs campaigns, drafting outreach materials and organizing conferences, seminars and workshops.

Mr. Jurgensen ran successful government relations campaigns on behalf of 3M and a number of medium-sized companies to gain parliamentary approval of European car license plates in Germany. He also set up and ran a Europe-wide legislative advocacy campaign aimed at the European Commission and national parliaments.

Rudy Jurgensen was also the Legislative Assistant to Jürgen Klimke, the company CEO and former member of the Hamburg state legislature who is now a member of the federal legislature, the Bundestag. In this position, he researched and drafted legislation, wrote speeches and organized meetings with constituents.
